At Bolton’s General Store in the Walnut Grove and Willard area, customers find more than good food, reasonable prices, and everyday necessities. They find a place where people know their names, remember their preferences, and make them feel welcome.

Six Missouri businesses were selected on Oct. 2 to receive the 2026 Missouri Good Neighbor Week Most Neighborly Business Award, recognizing businesses that go beyond transactions to build trust, uplift people and strengthen their communities.

The 2026 honorees are: D'Zines by T, Macon;  Villainous Grounds, Perryville; Mama Lisa's Grille, Sweet Springs; Bolton's General Store, Walnut Grove; Granny Barb's Pies and More LLC, Bismarck; Leopold Country Store, Leopold.

“The six winners were selected from a strong group of 30 businesses nominated from across Missouri,” said David Burton, community development specialist with MU Extension. “Bolton's received multiple nominations describing a consistent culture of neighborliness. Businesses help shape the daily life of a community. Some simply provide goods and services. Others, like Bolton’s, become places of belonging. Those are the businesses we wanted to celebrate."

The awards are part of Missouri Good Neighbor Week, celebrated Sept. 28-Oct. 4. Missouri Good Neighbor Week is an initiative of University of Missouri Extension and is officially recognized by the State of Missouri. Links to information on various other awards presented in 2026.

Bolton’s Store History

First established in 1931, Bolton’s General Store is the only business in Sacville, located north of Willard, east of Walnut Grove and south of Morrisville.

Owners Tylan and Kristy Holman purchased the business in 2023. They live near the store and work there daily with help from other staff. Tylan is a graduate of Morrisville.

The store is located at 7326 State Hwy BB, Willard, and is open seven days a week.

Bolton’s is best described as country-style general store with a gas station with a small hardware and plumbing section as well as feed. The store known is for its deli which features signature sandwiches, tacos, daily hot specials, fried food, and breakfast.

Nominations from Customers

One customer, Josh Boyd of Willard, describes Bolton’s as a place where visitors can enjoy a meal while learning valuable lessons about farming and life from the older gentlemen who gather there. His advice?

“Bring a Big Chief tablet and a No. 2 pencil because there is wisdom worth writing down around the tables at Boltons,” wrote Boyd.

Another customer, Sarah Woods of Walnut Grove, shares how Brenda, one of the cooks, remembers her family’s preferences when she calls on Saturday mornings. It is a small gesture, but one that makes her feel recognized and appreciated.

Kim Mahan of Willard noted the friendly staff and good food at reasonable prices in her nomination of Bolton’s Store.

“I shop there every day. It is my favorite store! They also sell feed for my dogs and chickens, and some hardware. It is just a welcoming place,” wrote Mahan.

Several qualities appeared repeatedly in the nominations for Bolton’s Store: personal relationships, being a gathering place, community generosity, practical service, and a  sense of belonging for customers.

Another nomination describes Bolton’s as a business that supports families in need through fundraisers and provides opportunities for community fellowship.

In an era when many communities are searching for ways to rebuild social connections, Bolton’s General Store demonstrates something important: a local business can be much more than a place to purchase goods and services. It can be a place where relationships are formed, stories are shared, and community grows.

As one nominator enthusiastically put it, “Follow me to Bolton’s!”

That is the spirit of Missouri Good Neighbor Week, and one reason Bolton’s General Store was recognized as one of Missouri’s Most Neighborly Businesses for 2026.

"A neighborly business doesn't just contribute to the local economy. It contributes to the social fabric of a community," Burton said. "It creates relationships, trust and belonging. When that happens consistently, a business becomes more than a place where people spend money. It becomes part of what makes a community home."
