National Good Neighbor Day: Resources and Plans for 2022

When the first meeting of the National Neighboring Collaboration was held on June 17, 2022 via Zoom, the goal for 2022 was simple: determine how might we collaborate to launch National Good Neighbor Day September 28, 2022.

People on the call came from across the United States and represented a variety of organizations: Jennifer Prophete - Hopeful Neighborhood Project; Sara Johnson - Hopeful Neighborhood Project Coach - St. Louis; Tim DeTellis - New Missions - Good Neighbor URL; David Burton - University of Missouri Extension - Neighboring 101 - Springfield; Paula Jensen - Dakota Resources - a nonprofit building the capacity of rural communities; Judy Larson - Placemakers - asset-based placemaking - Lemmon SD; Adam Barlow-Thompson - Neighboring Movement in Wichita KS; Catherine Johnson - Neighboring Movement in Wichita KS - asset mapping - faith-based training; Elizabeth Ramirez - Neighboring Movement - Community Animator Network Program; and Eric Smith - Central State University in Ohio.

The group focused on increasing unity of purpose and promotion for good neighbor day on Sept 28. The ultimate goal is to make being an engaged neighbor a normal and appropriate activity!

The slogan for 2022 was settled on as the team searched for a singular movement and one thing that anyone can do to be a good neighbor. "Start With Hello" becomes the first annual theme for this national holiday.

Already we are seeing the topic of being a good neighbor grow. During September, Nextdoor is promoting the idea of being a good neighbor. And Good Morning America with help from State Farm is promoting "neighboring month." In Missouri, recent legislation was passed for Missouri Good Neighbor Week and a goal has been set to document 10,000 acts of neighboring statewide!

Several financial partners were approached as well the idea of a non-profit benefiting from each act of neighboring that gets reported.

Social Media Campaigns include #sayhello #nationalgoodneighborday and #mogoodneighbors.
