Apply for Commission to Install Art in Republic's Owen Park (2024)

Two areas (see pictures with this post) in Owen Park, 441 N Bailey Ave, Republic, Missouri, are open for Commissioned Art Work and applications are being received now.

The approved art must be installed by June 1 as part of Show-Me Art in Neighborhoods Week.

These installations should be able to withstand local weather conditions for a minimum of two weeks.

Public art should be family-friendly and not be of a partisan or political nature.

There is an option for art to remain in place longer.

Artists are responsible for installation and for removal when needed, although permanent art is considered.

Project proposals are due by March 15 to David Burton and should be submitted by email at burtond@missouri.edu. This proposal should show the plan or design in some way and explain the materials used and the artist's experience and ability to complete the project.

A committee, including representatives of the Parks Department, will make the final selections.

Those selected will receive $500 after their art (sculpture, painting, created work) is installed.

This project is funded by the Greene County MU Extension Council as part of its Engaged Neighbor program. The public art work is needed as part of the new statewide Show-Me Art in Neighborhoods Week

SHOW-ME ART

Show Me Neighborhood Art Week is open to any resident of Missouri. This outreach effort by University of Missouri Extension and Creating Whole Communities seeks to empower public art made by residents as a contribution to the area’s sense of place where they live.

All Missourians are encouraged to participate by creating art using materials available at home to create art (like yard sculptures, chalk art projects, painted stones or murals, etc.) in the front of their residence or shared space in their neighborhood.

This project is about expressing creativity, no matter the skill level.

The inspiration for this statewide effort came from a program, LAWN (Lawn Art With Neighbors), launched in Springfield, Missouri in 2020 and organized by Sculpture Walk Springfield, Springfield Art Museum, Missouri State University: Art + Design Department, and Greene County MU Extension Council.

To register the location of your art installation, you must register on the University of Missouri Extension website. The deadline to register is May 24.

Registered addresses will help people find the art for viewing and be shared in a spreadsheet posted on the University of Missouri Extension website.

Registered sites will receive a sign designating their site as an official Show-Me Neighborhood Art Week stop.

All registered participants will be eligible for one of several statewide prizes recognizing the best art installations. Judges’ Choice awards will be given in age groups and People’s Choice Awards (based on votes via social media) will be given to the top three pieces statewide.
