Neighboring 101: Links to the Past Classes
Neighboring 101 is not just for new homeowners or people new to community life. The ongoing program is for anyone wanting to improve their neighborhood or community as well as their personal life and health.
When you register or subscribe to the program, you get access to all past classes and can attend live sessions with neighboring leaders from all across the United States. Class members can also access David Burton for individual coaching sessions on neighboring.
Neighboring 101 class members also receive a special digital newsletter for the class.

Bonus Neighboring 101 - Helping Neighbors Facing Code Enforcement in Wichita, Kansas - Susanne Boese, Code Enforcement Liaison for the City of Wichita, has a job that (as of 2021) is unique in the United States. She works with city code enforcement to connect violators (homeowners) with volunteers and grants to correct problems as far ranging as unmowed lawns and pest problems to yard waste and leaking roofs.
Session 7 on 5/20/21 - Creating and sustaining a tool library with Hannah King, Community Partnership of the Ozarks. She manages the only community tool library in Missouri. We will also learn more about a neighbor-friendly code enforcement process in the City of Wichita.
Session 8 on 6/17/2021 - Individual and community ideas for National Good Neighbor Day (Sept. 28) from our panel of experts: National Good Neighbor Day advocate Tim DeTellis, Melanie Reason with the City of Paducah, Kentucky and Naquela Pack with Wichita State University.
Session 9 on 7/15/2021 - Guests and topics this month include: 1) Exclusive interview with Dave Runyon, author of The Art of Neighboring; 2) Live presentation from Rachael Tripp, Community Partnership of the Ozarks on neighborhood cleanup projects in Springfield; 3) Exclusive interview with Sunni Purviance or Roanoake, Virginia on plawking.
Session 10 on 8/19/21 - We screened the award-winning movie, The Great Disconnect which explores the impact of technology and our lifestyle on loneliness and the role neighboring plays in overcoming that impact. For a limited time you can see the class and the movie online here but access is limited to class members and it will be temporary.
BONUS: Watercolored Notecards for Neighbors - Give a neighbor a notecard to express thanks or just to introduce yourself! A personalized watercolored notecard is easy to do and it demonstrates that you have invested time in this relationship. This is a 3-minute TV spot with David Burton.
Session 11 on 9/16/21 -- We heard from Amanda Rodriguez with IOBY about crowdfunding for neighborhood projects; Hannah King discussed her neighborhood bingo project in Springfield; and Shari McCallister in Houston, Mo. (pop 2890) talks about how that town celebrates National Good Neighbor Day by giving out 2,500 roses.
Session 12 on 10/21/21 -- We heard about using Halloween for neighboring with Chris McKinney, author of "Placed for a Purpose." Joseph Woodbury, CEO of Neighbor.com, shared about his companies rankings of the most neighborly cities in the United States. Class members shared what they did for National Good Neighbor Day and class member Megan Grimm shared her neighboring work with churches in Florida.
BONUS: Celebrating Good Neighbor Day One Rose at a Time - This bonus video is an interview with Shari McCalister of Houston, Missouri, highlight her efforts to give away 3,000 roses on good neighbor day. What a great example!
Session 13 on 11/18/21 -- Amber Allen, University of Missouri Extension Human Development Specialist, presented on hope and how it can impact your neighborhood. Hope can be learned, and improved. Goal setting is one of the first steps actually. And hope also fits very well with an asset-based community development approach to neighboring.
Session 14 on 12/16/2021 - Our special guest was Pastor Michael Mather, the author of “Having Nothing, Possessing Everything” and a faculty member at the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) Institute at DePaul University. His book is the story of how one church found abundance in a community of material poverty.
Session 15 on 1/20/2022 - Our special guest was Becky McCray, creator of the "Idea Friendly Method." McCray started Small Biz Survival in 2006 to share rural business and community building stories and ideas with other small town business people. She helps us apply the Idea Friendly Method to neighboring.
Session 16 on 2/17/2022 -- Sara Johnson, Neighborhood Project Coach with The Hopeful Neighborhood (based in St. Louis) gives an introduction to the founding principles of The Hopeful Neighborhood and asset-based community development.
Session 17 on 3/17/2022 - Chris Rodell, author of "Growing up in Mister Rogers' REAL Neighborhood" was our guest. The book is about the influence Latrobe had on young Fred, the influence the adult Fred had on Latrobe and the influence both exerted on the author.
Session 18 on 4/21/2022 - Larry Garcia from Surprise, Arizona and Kalli Sassell from Grand Junction, Colorado discuss the block party trailers that their respective cities provide residents and we discuss a new get-together guide.

Session 19 on 5/19/2022 - DeAmon Harges of Indianapolis talk about the benefits of being a community listener for his neighborhood and for him personally. Also gave a report on Neighborhoods USA.
Session 20 on 6/16/2022 - Training for those serving as "county connectors" for Missouri Good Neighbor Week.
Session 21 on 7/21/22 -- Special guest Judy Larson of Lemmon, South Dakota shared about placemaking and multigenerational efforts in this community of 1200 people.

Session 22 on 8/18/22 -- Learn more about the nationwide neighboring initiative known as Lasagna Love. She will share about how a community-wide music and food fest can celebrate the diversity of a neighborhood all year long!
Session 23 on 9/15/22 -- National Good Neighbor Day and Missouri Good Neighbor Week this month are getting American's talking! Hear from the experts and learn of some fun examples.

Session 26 on 12/15/2022 - Patricia Plumb, a trainer with the International Forgiveness Institute, addresses how forgiveness and improve our lives and our neighborhoods.
Session 27 on 1/19/2023 -- City neighboring initiatives can improve neighborhoods and increase engagement. Hear about the impact of neighboring efforts in Peoria, Arizona, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Green Bay, WI., and Paducah, KY.

Session 28 on 2/16/2023 -- Peter Lovenheim, author of "In the Neighborhood: The Search for Community on an American Street, One Sleepover at a Time" was our guest. He shares insights from his efforts to get to know the people living on his street following a tragedy.
Session 29 on 3/16/2023 -- Maxwell King, author of "The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers." As the only biography on Mister Rogers, this book was a national best-seller and on the New York Times Bestseller list. Mr. King shares lessons we can all learn from Mister Rogers.
Session 30 on 4/20/2023 -- Melody Warnick is the author of "This Is Where You Belong: The Art and Science of Loving the Place You Live" and "If you Could Live Anywhere." Her books look at the issue of placemaking which applies to communities and neighborhoods alike.
Session 31 on 5/18/2023 - Majora Carter is an urban revitalization strategist, real estate developer, MacArthur Fellow Peabody award winning broadcaster, owner of the Boogie Down Grind Cafe in the Bronx, and author“Reclaiming Your Community: You Don’t Have To Move Out of Your Neighborhood to Live in a Better One.”
Session 32 on 6/15/2023 - Our guest on Neighboring 101 today was Jennifer Prophete, community programming director with the Hopeful Neighborhood Project. The topic was "finding gifts in your community. Check out the recap video if you had to miss.
Session 33 on 8/17/2023 - Our guest, again, is Jennifer Prophete. Her topic is "Imagine the Possibilities of Your Neighborhood" and she takes us through the use of a neighborhood well-being survey that is grounded in research. See the class video here.
Session 34 on 9/21//2023 - Jennifer Prophete wraps up her training but helping us understand how to "Pursue the Common Good." We then wrapped up with a discussion on the neighboring holidays in September.

We learn from Dr. Seth Kaplan, author of "Fragile Neighborhoods." Americans could now be considered socially fragile. This author looks at what makes a neighborhood fragile and some of the success stories across America that have turned neighborhoods and communities around.

Session 40 of Neighboring 101 - Restore SGF Interview
Dana Elwell, director of Springfield SGF, shares about the new Restore SGF Block Challenge Grant Program in Springfield, Missouri. The program goal is to encourage reinvestment in Springfield’s historic neighborhoods to: 1) Improve Springfield’s housing stock with a neighbor-by-neighbor approach; 2) Create a wave of reinvestment and renewed community pride; 3) Unite neighbors to improve the physical appearance of SGF’s neighborhoods.

Session 42 of Neighboring 101 - Living Near and Helping Neighbors With Dementia
Mark Applegate, Director of Safety and Security/Dementia Care Specialist for Senior Age in Springfield, Mo. was our guest speaker. Mark shares his own heart-warming story about dementia and his mother, along with information on symptoms and dos and don'ts for people with dementia and their caregivers. Odds are that you have someone with dementia living near or around you right now.
Session 43 of Neighboring 101 - You Are the Help Until Help Arrives
This month's Neighboring 101 was a FEMA program is known as, "You Are the Help Until Help Arrives." Life-threatening emergencies can happen fast and emergency responders aren’t always nearby. You may be able to save a life in your neighborhood by taking simple actions immediately. Links are provided in the details of the YouTube video to the FEMA training page and a certificate of completion if you watch the class.
This session was with Kendra Broekhuis, author of "Here Goes Nothing: An Introvert's Reckless Attempt to Love Her Neighbor. Here from author and admitted introvert," and it was fantastic! Session 45 of Neighboring 101 - Creating and Sustaining a Love Your Neighbor Week in Your Town
Love Thy Neighbor started in Viburnum, Missouri, but has now spread to these Missouri towns: Salem, Ozark, Park Hills, Bowling Green, Sullivan, and Crawford County. Session 51 of Neighboring 101 - Meeting My Neighbors By Playing Catch
Our guest will be Ethan Bryan who wrote a book about the lessons he learned through playing catch with different people in his community for 356 days. “A Year of Playing Catch” was published in 2020. The book has inspired others to do the same thing to meet their neighbors and community members. We will also hear from Travis Edwards, a resident of Republic, Missouri, who was inspired by the book to do the same thing.
June 20, 2024 - This month's session premiered on YouTube as a recorded interview with Jen Moore, an enthusiast of Little Free Libraries in Springfield, Mo. And Christy Boyce, the person behind the Free Blockbuster Box installed in Republic, Mo. Learn more about both and some tricks to maintaining them, and examples of this can help you get to know your neighbors and for neighbors to get to know you.
Session 53 of Neighboring 101 - The Best of NUSA
July 2024 - Jake Norris was a top award winner at Neighborhoods USA in 2024. Hear his award-winning presentation about the murals in Holland, Michigan. Then learn some tricks for making connections from Megan Ginn and Ian Campbell that you can use to learn about your neighbors. And finish up with discussion about "lessons learned" at NUSA this year.
Session 54 of Neighboring 101 - The Birthplace of Modern Neighboring
August 15, 2024 - Ideas From the Birthplace of Neighboring: Arvada and Englewood, Colorado. For those who have read "The Art of Neighboring" by Dave Runyon and Jay Pathak, you know that Runyon was living in Arvada, Colorado at that time. The book helped to start a national neighboring movement but it began in the City of Arvada with a meeting between the Mayor and some area pastors. Now, 12 years after the book was written, Arvada has a University of Missouri graduate working in neighborhood engagement! We will hear from Brady Porterfield-Finn about his neighboring programs and specifically a Neighbor Mediation program.

September 19, 2024 - We are hosting a virtual online block party for members of Neighboring 101. This is being done in celebration of the upcoming National Good Neighbor Day. Session 56 of Neighboring 101 - Faith of our Neighbors
Yet another Ozarks roundtable, highlighting the various faiths of our neighbors. Session 57 of Neighboring 101 - 1000 Block Parties in Colorado Springs
This year, Colorado Springs has had a citywide effort to host 1000 block parties for the purchase of engagement and connection to counter mental health challenges like loneliness. Mayor Yemi announced the challenge. Thomas Thompson has implemented the plan for the city along with volunteers and other partners. We hear from Thomas some tips of block parties and having the same type of challenge in your city.

November 2024 -- Andy Baker lives in a small town. Atlanta, Missouri has less than 400 residents. But somehow Andy is able to organize over 100 people annually to do service projects in town. Learn his tricks and the impact it can have on your town.
