Life Lessons from Tom Petty


A year after I graduated from college, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released the song: “I Won’t Back Down.” It became a favorite of mine. Maybe it was the melody. Perhaps it was the guitar. Nah, who am I kidding, it was because I was in the newspaper business in 1989.

I love music. I have lots of favorite songs and artists. But for me, Tom Petty’s music transcended generations. His timeless lyrics and catchy melodies resonate with listeners. His songs also offer profound insights into life, love, and the human experience. 

I learned some valuable lessons from Tom Petty's melodies during the 1990s. Here are five that came to mind.

Lesson 1: Persistence and Resilience

In "I Won't Back Down," Petty sings, "You can stand me up at the gates of hell, but I won't back down." This anthem of resilience teaches us to persevere in the face of adversity. It reminds us that challenges may arise, but with determination and courage, we can overcome them.

Lesson 2: Embracing Change. 

The song "Learning to Fly" encapsulates the journey of self-discovery and transformation. Petty's lyrics, "Well, I started out down a dirty road / Started out all alone," resonate with anyone navigating life's uncertainties. It teaches us to embrace change, to spread our wings and soar into the unknown, knowing that growth lies on the other side.

Lesson 3: Living in the Present 

In "Time to Move On," Petty reflects on the transient nature of life, singing, "It's time to move on, time to get going / What lies ahead, I have no way of knowing." This song encourages us to live in the present moment, cherish the here and now, and embrace the journey, regardless of its uncertainties.

Lesson 4: Love and Relationships 

Tom Petty's ballads explore the complexities of love and relationships. In "Wildflowers," he croons, "You belong among the wildflowers / You belong in a boat out at sea." These lyrics celebrate individuality and the beauty of authentic connections, reminding us to cherish those who bring color and joy to our lives.

Lesson 5: Finding Meaning in Music 

For many, Tom Petty's music is a source of solace and inspiration. In "Music is Love," he captures the transformative power of music, singing, "Music is love, love is music, music is life, and I love my music." Through his melodies, Petty reminds us of the profound impact that music can have on our lives, offering comfort, catharsis, and a sense of belonging.

Tom Petty's songs are more than just music; they are timeless anthems of resilience, love, and self-discovery. His lyrics impart invaluable life lessons, encouraging listeners to embrace change, live courageously, and find solace in the melodies of life. RIP Tom Petty.

Winners Announced in First Show-Me Neighborhood Art Week

SPRINGFIELD, MO. -  University of Missouri Extension has announced the 2024 award winners in a new statewide public art exhibit called Show Me Neighborhood Art Week (June 1-June 15).  This art-focused outreach program strives to promote creative expression and public art made by residents, regardless of their skill level, as a contribution to the community's sense of place and residents' sense of belonging. Winners in the 2024 event were announced as part of a live online event on Thursday, June 27. Prizes given are from other Missouri artists.
