Neighborhood Display Tells a Story of Unity
Thank you for clicking on the sign and getting details on the art displays near Owen Park in Republic, Missouri.
The art displayed is known as a "barn quilt" and artists follow various patterns that require the squares to be measured out much like a quilt. The art is acrylic paint on wood that was first painted with primer. Once the quilt painting is done, the board is sealed with Varathane Ultimate Water-Based Spar Urethane Crystal Clear Satin. The edges were sealed with caulking.
This current display was first installed in the Spring of 2024 as part of Show-Me Neighborhood Art Week. The project took an honorable mention award in the statewide competition that had nearly 100 entries.
Each colorful barn quilt on the two neighborhood art displays near Owen Park in Republic, Mo., is created by a different neighbor.
The artists for 2024 were: Rose White, Brenda White, Kenna Bishop, Stacey Burton, David Burton and Carland Dorris.
The variety of styles and colors tell the story of a neighborhood comprised of very different people joined in a bond over the love of art and their nearby park.
The art has been attached to cedar picket fence panels that harken back to the old idea of yards with picket fences. It is a visual representation of a neighborhood.
So visually, we see with this project that every person is uniquely created but we are joined together in a neighborhood. We are stronger when working together and I would say prettier too!
It is also a reminder that our neighbors have gifts and and abilities, along with both needs and weaknesses. Characteristics that motivate our respect and our compassion.
Past displays have had other themes. The one in 2022-2023 had over 20 neighbors participate and sign individual spin art creations. You can read about that display here.
