In 2025: The Importance of Trust Among Neighbors

 

Many years ago, my wife and I had a friend who came home to find her husband had passed away on their front porch. Their house was on a busy street, and we often wondered how many people might have seen him lying there but didn’t stop to help. This story reflects a troubling trend—people passing by without noticing or caring about  someone in need.


Neighbors are often the closest people to us in emergencies, acting as first responders when help is needed. Yet, it seems more common today for neighbors to remain disconnected, focused on their own lives. This may be partly due to distractions, like technology, but it also shows a decline in empathy and concern for others.


Building Trust Builds Community


Trust is the foundation of any community. When neighbors trust each other, they create stronger connections and a sense of belonging. People are more likely to help one another, share resources, and work together. This creates a positive environment where everyone feels cared for and invested in each other’s well-being.


Communities where trust is strong are more vibrant. People participate in neighborhood activities, check in on each other, and form a shared identity. Trust doesn’t just make individuals feel supported—it strengthens the entire neighborhood.


Trust Creates Safety


When neighbors trust each other, they look out for one another. This watchfulness can prevent crime and make communities safer. Trusted neighbors may organize watch programs or simply keep an eye out for anything unusual. This sense of shared responsibility makes it harder for criminal behavior to take hold.


Feeling safe in your community doesn’t just happen—it’s built through relationships based on trust.


Resolving Disputes Peacefully


Conflicts happen, even in the best neighborhoods. Whether it’s noise, property lines, or other disagreements, trust makes it easier to solve problems peacefully. Neighbors who trust each other are more likely to talk openly and work toward solutions. Instead of escalating issues, they rely on mutual respect and understanding.


This ability to resolve conflicts calmly keeps the community atmosphere positive and cooperative.


Stronger Together


Trust also leads to collective success. Neighbors who trust each other can pool their skills and resources to improve their area. Whether it’s planning a block party, fixing up shared spaces, or advocating for local improvements, working together makes the neighborhood stronger.

By getting to know our neighbors, showing empathy, and building relationships, we can create communities where everyone feels supported and valued. Let’s strive to be neighbors who care, trust, and make a difference every day.

MU Extension Announces Show Me Neighborhood Art Week June 1-15

  To participate in Show Me Neighborhood Art Week, Missourians  must register here online . The registration deadline for Show Me Neighborhood Art Week is May 24. Preexisting and new public art can be registered, but only new art can be considered for prizes. Missouri's Most Engaged Neighbors Honored as Part of Missouri Good Neighbor Week

 Jessica Bueler, Saint Louis City, Missouri During Missouri Good Neighbor Week 2024, over 120 individuals were nominated as Missouri's Most Engaged Neighbor, and 22 were selected for individual recognition. Our Missouri celebration also got national attention from NextDoor, the social media company, whose leadership team worked with us to create a post that went out nationwide on NextDoor on Sept. 27.  You can access it here . At that point, another 50 nominations poured in from across the state.
