What It Means to Love Your Neighbor According to Missourians

 


In the 2024 "State of Neighboring" survey of Missourians, our final survey question sought open-ended responses to this question: “What does it mean to love your neighbor?” This is an analysis of the main themes and categories identified in the responses:

Principle Themes

  1. Kindness and Respect: A dominant theme is the emphasis on kindness and respect towards neighbors. Many respondents equate loving your neighbor with treating them kindly and showing respect for their privacy, property, and individuality.

  2. Empathy and Assistance: Respondents frequently highlighted the importance of being empathetic and providing assistance. This includes checking on neighbors in times of need, offering help without being asked, and providing support during emergencies.

  3. The Golden Rule: A recurring sentiment reflects the “Golden Rule”—treating others as one wishes to be treated. This principle encompasses respect, fairness, and mutual care.

  4. Community and Connection: Some responses point to building strong community ties, fostering friendships, and creating a sense of belonging among neighbors.

  5. Biblical and Moral Foundations: Many responses draw on religious or moral teachings, especially the Biblical commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself.” This includes acts of kindness, forgiveness, and non-judgmental behavior.

  6. Boundaries and Respect for Privacy: A segment of respondents emphasized the importance of respecting boundaries, including personal space and privacy, while still maintaining a cordial relationship.

  7. Challenges in Modern Neighboring: Some responses highlighted difficulties in forming connections due to modern lifestyles, such as increased privacy preferences, lack of time, or mistrust arising from past negative experiences.

  8. Cultural and Rural/Urban Differences: Distinctions were drawn between suburban, urban, and rural settings, with rural respondents emphasizing self-reliance and space, while urban participants leaned towards occasional interaction and mutual support.

Categories of Responses

  1. Active Engagement: Includes those advocating for proactive acts of kindness, like helping in emergencies, checking in regularly, and fostering positive relationships.

  2. Respectful Coexistence: Focuses on being polite, maintaining peace, and respecting neighbors' boundaries without necessarily forming close personal connections.

  3. Moral and Religious Guidance: Reflects interpretations rooted in religious teachings, emphasizing unconditional love, respect, and care for others as moral imperatives.

  4. Reciprocal Relations: Highlights mutual assistance and a balance of giving and receiving, often in practical or neighborly terms.

  5. Community Building: Encourages efforts to strengthen neighborhood bonds through shared activities, cooperation, and mutual protection.

The overarching theme across the responses is a call for empathy, respect, and kindness in fostering harmonious relationships with neighbors. These values are tied to broader societal principles and highlight the importance of balancing involvement with respect for privacy, demonstrating the nuanced ways in which people interpret the idea of loving their neighbor. These insights provide a foundation for understanding how this concept manifests in day-to-day life and its potential to strengthen community bonds.

MU Extension Announces Show Me Neighborhood Art Week June 1-15

  To participate in Show Me Neighborhood Art Week, Missourians  must register here online . The registration deadline for Show Me Neighborhood Art Week is May 24. Preexisting and new public art can be registered, but only new art can be considered for prizes. The location for this event is ALL of Missouri -- your front yard, your neighborhood, and your community. The online state map marking locations around Missouri will be interactive. Missouri's Most Engaged Neighbors Honored as Part of Missouri Good Neighbor Week

 Jessica Bueler, Saint Louis City, Missouri During Missouri Good Neighbor Week 2024, over 120 individuals were nominated as Missouri's Most Engaged Neighbor, and 22 were selected for individual recognition. Our Missouri celebration also got national attention from NextDoor, the social media company, whose leadership team worked with us to create a post that went out nationwide on NextDoor on Sept. 27.  You can access it here . At that point, another 50 nominations poured in from across the state.
