Registration Open for Show-Me Neighborhood Art Week 2025; Missourians Invited to Celebrate Creativity and Community

 


After a wildly successful debut last year, Show-Me Neighborhood Art Week is back—and bigger than ever. From June 1 to June 15, 2025, Missouri neighborhoods will once again become outdoor art galleries celebrating local talent, civic pride, and neighborly connections. 

Residents across the state are encouraged to register their projects now at extension.missouri.edu.

Organized by University of Missouri Extension, Show-Me Neighborhood Art Week invites neighbors to create and display art outside their homes, businesses, community centers, and shared spaces. Art projects can include anything from sidewalk chalk murals and yarn-bombed fences to hand-crafted sculptures or front-lawn displays. 

The goal: to make creativity visible and bring neighbors together in fun, meaningful ways to increase their sense of belonging.

Last year’s launch drew 73 registered sites, with projects ranging from murals and recycled art to community installations and kid-made masterpieces. Over 1,100 people voted online for the People’s Choice Award, and 75% of participants reported feeling more connected to their neighborhood because of the event.

“This event is proof that art can transform more than just walls—it can transform relationships,” said David Burton, MU Extension community development specialist. “When neighbors create together, they get to know each other better, take pride in their community, and form bonds that last long after the paint dries.”

Participants can register individually or as a team, and will be eligible for awards and recognition in categories such as “Best in Show” and “People’s Choice” along with winners in each of the seven MU Extension regions. 

Organizers encourage projects that use recycled materials, promote accessibility, and celebrate the unique identity of Missouri’s neighborhoods.

Last year’s award-winning projects included the following: 

  • A mural in Versailles City Park by students in Jennifer Avery's class at Morgan County R-II School District
  • Hand-crafted driveway flowers in Springfield by Robin Kastner.
  • A striking mural on the Chamber of Commerce building in Union by Donna Huellinghoff and Eileen Wade.
  • A painted rock creation called "Susie the Snake" started by Marj Locker in Ludlow and added to by residents.
  • Donovan Maldonado's fancy woman’s face mural on Stanford Street in Springfield.
  • And  a "Sweet Gum Gardener" scarecrow by Dale Naas, St. Louis.

Missouri's Most Engaged Neighbors Honored as Part of Missouri Good Neighbor Week

 Jessica Bueler, Saint Louis City, Missouri During Missouri Good Neighbor Week 2024, over 120 individuals were nominated as Missouri's Most Engaged Neighbor, and 22 were selected for individual recognition. Our Missouri celebration also got national attention from NextDoor, the social media company, whose leadership team worked with us to create a post that went out nationwide on NextDoor on Sept. 27.  You can access it here . At that point, another 50 nominations poured in from across the state. Results of 2024 Missouri Good Neighbor Week Exceed 30,000 Acts of Neighboring!

  Several hands have been busy tabulating the final results from the 4th Annual Missouri Good Neighbor Week. While those volunteers and partners are invaluable, people like you are also worthy of thanks.  Individual Missourians who reported their acts of neighboring nominated someone for an award, or organized a block party! Or you were on one of 60 committees with University of Missouri Extension to organize county-level efforts that account for over 14,000 acts of neighboring this year!  No matter your role or level of involvement, thank you. On another positive note, the efforts in Missouri have not gone unnoticed. In the last month, I have received inquiries about the creation of other statewide neighbor weeks from Massachusetts, Michigan, Connecticut, California, Florida, Oklahoma, Washington, and Colorado.
