What is the Role of a Missouri Good Neighbor Week Ambassador?

 

An ambassador is, by definition, a person who represents and promotes a person, organization, cause, or country to others.

The word has two important ideas built into it:

  1. Representative — An ambassador represents something they believe in. They carry its message, values, and identity to other people.
  2. Relationship builder — An ambassador doesn’t merely deliver information; they build connections, create goodwill, and encourage others to become involved.

What does an ambassador actually do? An ambassador typically:

  • Represents — speaks positively and accurately about the organization or cause.
  • Introduces — tells others about the opportunity and invites them to participate.
  • Connects — brings people, organizations, and resources together.
  • Encourages — motivates others to take action.
  • Models — demonstrates the behavior or values the organization promotes.
  • Expands reach — takes the organization’s message into places it couldn’t reach by itself.
  • Builds relationships — develops ongoing connections rather than simply promoting an event.

A Missouri Good Neighbor Ambassador wouldn’t simply be someone who promotes Good Neighbor Week. They would be someone who helps make neighboring normal in their own circle of influence.

That could mean: A Good Neighbor Ambassador is someone who represents the spirit of neighboring, encourages people to know and help their neighbors, and helps create a culture where being a good neighbor is expected and normal.

Examples of Missouri Good Neighbor Week Ambassador activity includes:

  • Posting about the week on social media.
  • Reporting their neighboring activity all year long.
  • Recruiting others to participate in the holiday.
  • Serving on good neighbor week board if asked.
  • Attending special events and trainings for Ambassadors.

That distinction is important. We are not creating a marketing volunteer program. The goal is to create a network of people who carry the movement into their own neighborhoods, workplaces, churches, schools, businesses and communities.

These awards highlight everyday Missourians whose commitment to their neighborhoods strengthens community bonds and creates belonging across the state. Missouri Good Neighbor Week Engages Over 42,000 People in 110 Cities and 86 Counties; Six Cities Named Most Neighborly

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missourians once again demonstrated the power of neighborliness during Missouri Good Neighbor Week (Sept. 28–Oct. 4, 2025), an annual statewide celebration of everyday kindness and connection coordinated by University of Missouri Extension and supported by The Hopeful Neighborhood Project. According to the official report, 42,134 acts of neighborliness were documented this week through 433 different neighboring actions, pledges, campaigns, and proclamations — making this Missouri’s largest civic engagement event focused on building stronger communities. Widespread Participation Reports were submitted from 110 cities and 86 counties, showing that the movement to “know, love, and serve your neighbors” has taken deep root across both urban and rural Missouri.
